Founded in 1921, as an electrotechnical company for building installations, Elektra Tailfingen started producing DC starters and lever switches the following year. Further development saw the first patent application of sewing machine controllers and its series, then came the change from DC to AC grids and this saw the birth of its Star Triangle Switches and Rollers.

In 1954, Elektra was instrumental to displaced the Roller type switches to the Cam typed switches. This new era of cam switches heralds in the technological shift to an economical switching technology which Elektra had pioneered.
